Higher Hopes for Denser Living
Higher Hopes for Denser Living explores the current constraints in existing medium-density housing in New Zealand. People traditionally see suburban architecture as a single standalone dwelling with a big backyard where there is a sense of privacy between them and their neighbours. The vision of a suburban home is based on past memories, and not necessarily adapted to the current context and constraints of future housing needs. The experiences of ‘home’ are of great importance as they contribute to the resident’s wellbeing and satisfaction.
Medium-density housing is a major growth area in New Zealand urban developments. As the need for greater housing density increases, improving the quality of design in medium-density housing will raise the appeal to New Zealanders. There is a growing agreement that medium-density housing developments are part of the answer to New Zealand’s housing supply issues. However, there is less agreement on what constitutes good quality medium-density housing and how this may assist in enhancing livability for those who live in these areas.
The Wellington suburb of Kilbirnie will be explored as it is an existing dense suburban area in Wellington with connection to the city. An opportunity exists here to enhance livability and vitality* within and around the town centre through quality residential intensification. Kilbirnie currently has a limited range of housing choices, particularly in terms of medium-density terrace and townhouses. Providing more choice would improve vitality and safety and help to maintain a wider range of services and will ensure the town centre maintains its role as a key social and communal hub for the southern and eastern suburbs of Wellington.
